ARNGE DRANK – by Paul Baker
Rock/Funk- Medium
Arnge Drank – Orange Drink with an ATTITUDE! This funky chart starts with a piano riff to set up the rhythm groove before the trumpet and altos hit with the melody. Trombones and low saxes support with counterpoint. After the trombones take us through the bridge the saxes again state the melody in a dramatic stop time section that moves into the trumpet and trombone solos. After a drum solo the bari and bass trombone shine as they set the funky foundation for the shout chorus. A return of the piano riff sets up the final melodic statement and dramatic coda. Trumpet range to written High C. Trombone to G.

Competition rules: The National Youth Jazz Competition Rules have been changed for 2023. The 2023 set piece ARNGE DRANK is a rock funk piece so the three own choice pieces must be 1) a ballad, 2) a swing piece, and 3) a latin, funk or modern jazz piece.
This is the Rule change:
- Each Jazz Big Band competing in the Big Band competition must play FOUR pieces:
(i) Set piece. This item will be set each year by the Head Judge with the Tauranga Jazz Society Youth Jazz Committee. Information re availability will be notified via entry forms. This item will include an open section for solos, and at least 3 soloists must be featured.
(ii) own choice – ballad (iii) own choice – latin, jazz rock, funk or modern jazz
(iv) own choice – swing
